Adam & The Ants were an early 80s New Romantic cum post punk outfit who were often derided, especially frontman Adam Ant (real name Stuart Goddard) for his theatrical and flamboyant appearance.
Formed in 1977, and taking several years and line-up changes, Adam & The Ants finally made it big when guitarist and songwriter Marco Pirroni joined, and co-wrote much of The Ants material with Adam. The album 'Kings of the Wild Frontier' was a number one in the UK, early in 1981. Hit singles such as 'Dog Eat Dog', 'Antmusic', and 'Ant Rap', and number one singles 'Stand and Deliver' and 'Prince Charming' followed.
Though more highly regarded by music analysts these days, it's fair to say that Adam & The Ants musical credentials shouldn't be overblown. They were fun, no doubt, wrote some good tunes, loved heavy drumming, and Adam Ant himself brought a bit of history into British rock and roll - even if the characters were bad boy pirates and highwaymen! Adam was kind to ants, and certainly doesn't deserve the troubles he's suffered in recent years.
