The
Kaiser Chiefs 2006 Brits
Best
British Group
- Best British Rock Act - Best British Live Act
Into 2005
with a bullet, were Kaiser Chiefs, who are made up of Ricky
Wilson (vocals), Andrew White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick
'Peanut' Baines (keyboards, synthesizers), and Nick Hodgson
(drums).
Kaiser Chiefs could have come out of Uganda, but they did not,
they come out of Leeds, which is in the county of Yorkshire, in
England. 2003 saw the birth of the group, who were named after
South African football team, Kaizer Chiefs, a former club of
Leeds United defensive stalwart, Lucas Radebe (Rio Ferdinand is
the poor man's Radebe).
Oh my eyes, Glastonbury, 2005. Dinosaur cruelty encouraged by a
wanton Rickay Wilson, throwing a gentle, harmless, inflated,
green dinosaur into a baying crowd of toughs. This was the moment
when Kaiser Chiefs captured the world.
Two British bands were at Live 8 in Philadelphia, both of the
Yorkshire persuasion. Kaiser lookalikes/soundalikes Def Leppard,
and Kaiser Chiefs. The latter opened the gig, on what looked a
warm day, and were as impeccable as ever, performing their big
three, 'I Predict a Riot', 'Everyday I Love You Less And Less',
and 'Oh My God' - all from the eargasm-filled 'Employment' album.
Peanut was later spotted glued to Stevie Wonder's set, lurking in
the shadows. He seemed oblivious to the female bum-wiggling
frenzy going on around him, so fair play to him there.
I digress. Kaiser Chiefs are magnificent. Deservedly,
'Employment' was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize,
though it didn't win...The smouldering Wilson has described
Kaiser Chiefs as the second best-ever band after The Beatles,
which shows you just how good those Liverpool scruffs were.
The Kaisers have good songs, good musicianship, good stage
presence, and good humour, and it's the mélange that is the
thing that works. Kind of Indie New Wave Britpop, and just look
at 'em. Peanut looks like a ska keyboardist, White looks like a
young John Lennon (when he's got shades on), Rix is pure glam,
Hodgson looks like someone who could have been in a boy band, and
Wilson looks like a rebellious accountant.
