Alexander Solzhenitsyn Obituary
Written by Paul Rance
Thursday, 7 August 2008
Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn was one of the true giants of 20th Century literature. Persecuted by Stalin during the dictator's purges, and sent to the notorious gulags, Solzhenitsyn used the experience of being imprisoned for years to write the documentary novel 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich'.
Solzhenitsyn was thrown out of his own country in 1974, but returned in 1994, and was treated very differently, culminating in a state funeral days after his death through heart failure on August 3rd, 2008.
Born a year after the Russian Revolution, Alexander Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970.
