American satirical writer Kurt Vonnegut died on April 11th, aged 84, after not recovering from a fall at his Manhattan home weeks earlier.

Kurt Vonnegut described himself as a religious sceptic and free-thinking humanist, who witnessed the virtual obliteration of Dresden in World War Two - a life changing event for the writer, and a major influence on his writing 'Slaughterhouse Five'. Vonnegut's other novels included 'Cat's Cradle'.
