Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)
Horatio Nelson was the son of a Norfolk clergyman, and wasn't particularly destined for greatness as an admiral. He joined the Navy aged only 12, and became a captain in 1793 - in his mid-30s. Nelson's best years lay ahead of him however, and his victories at Copenhagen (1801) and Trafalgar (1805), together with his bravery (he lost an arm and eye in combat), consideration for his men, and his affair with Emma Hamilton, all made him the stuff of legend. His funeral in London was, and probably still remains, the biggest outpouring of national grief England has ever seen.
