Dies

Peter Benchley, American writer of 1970s blockbuster, Jaws, died on February 11th, of a progressive lung disease. He was 65.
Ironically, Benchley was a great shark conservationist, and though Steven Spielberg's 1975 film adaptation of Benchley's novel made both men's careers, it also helped create a certain amount of paranoia about sharks - something Benchley hated.
With a father (Nathaniel Benchley) and grandfather (Robert Benchley) as writers, Peter Benchley had writing in his genes. He loved writing about the sea, and his other novels included The Deep and The Girl of the Sea of Cortez - the latter a magical story about a girl who befriends manta rays.
