BUTTERFLIES
'Butterflies' was one of writer Carla
Lane's best sitcoms, along with 'Bread' and 'The Liver
Birds'. Wendy Craig plays the scatterbrained, unhappy
housewife, and a candidate for worst cook in the world,
Ria Parkinson. Geoffrey Palmer plays butterfly collecting
dentist husband Ben - possibly the most miserable
character seen in a TV comedy until 'One Foot In The
Grave' and Victor Meldrew. Ben is tormented by his two
sons lack of respect and laziness. Nicholas Lyndhurst
plays the impossibly thin son Adam, and Andrew Hall plays
smug elder brother Russell. Ria is tired of the family
squabbling, and daydreams about a romance with her suave
male friend, Leonard (Bruce Montague). 'Butterflies' ran
for four series, from 1978 until 1983, on the BBC.
