KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

Hyacinth and Richard trying to keep up appearances...
Patricia Routledge's Hyacinth Bucket was one of the most formidable women in the history of British sitcom. Clive Swift played her patient, dry and philosophical husband, Richard.
'Keeping Up Appearances' was an apt title, as that was exactly what super snob Hyacinth was trying to do. One sister, Rose, was a maneater, and another sister, Daisy, was married to the slob Onslow. Hyacinth was also oblivious to the fact that the son she doted on, Sheridan, was obviously gay - though we never actually get to see this character. Another sister, Violet, has the sort of lifestyle Hyacinth aspires to.
The superb observational writing of Roy Clarke made 'Keeping Up Appearances' one of the BBC's best sitcoms of the 1990s, and it ran from 1990-1995. It was produced and directed by Harold Snoad.
