'Open All Hours' was an engaging Roy Clarke comedy, with Ronnie Barker's stuttering shopkeeper Arkwright, innocent David Jason's Granville, and Lynda Baron's voluptuous, worldly-wise Nurse Gladys Emmanuel making up a lovable and eccentric triumvirate of characters. After a slow start (the pilot episode was in 1973), it ran for four series, on and off, between 1976 and 1985, to become one of British sitcom's most understated, and most unlikely, hit shows.
