'The Good Life' was an often derided sitcom. It was "too cosy" its critics would argue, but its enduring popularity is a two-fingered salute to those critics. Anyway, for vegetarians like me, it didn't seem that cosy at all, with the thought of pigs and chickens being slaughtered! But, Tom and Barbara were too steeped in town cosiness to go the whole hog, so to speak...

The series was helped by its superb cast, with Richard Briers playing Tom Good, a middle-aged man looking to escape the rat race, via self-sufficiency in Surbiton. Tom and youthful wife Barbara, played exquisitely by the tomboyish, but alluring, Felicity Kendal, lived next door to the ultra snob Margo (Penelope Keith) and the personable Jerry Leadbetter (Paul Eddington). Apart from the obvious Englishness of the class thing, one of the most interesting things about the series was the sexual undercurrent both between Tom and Margo, and Barbara and Jerry.
