The Royle Family It didn't seem a good idea to base a comedy around a family just sitting around watching television, but somehow 'The Royle Family' worked, possibly because of the interaction between the likeable characters. 'The Royle Family', after a six year break, came back for a one hour special, screened by BBC1 in October, 2006, which was excellent, with Liz Smith's beautifully moving portrayal of Nan outstanding. I won't spoil the ending for those of you who haven't seen it, but this was a throwback to the classic era of sitcoms. Ricky Tomlinson, as Jim Royle, head of the household, may have made the word 'arse' trendy (and we've been paying the consequences ever since!), but this show, which ran for three series, beginning in 1998, was skilfully written and definitely connected with people right across the social spectrum. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com.
