British comedy's second great pre-war film star after Charlie Chaplin,
Aberdeen-born Will Hay specialised in roles as incompetent men in authority. He
began his career as an entertainer at charity shows, then moved
on to music hall, then radio, before he appeared in his first
film, 'Know Your Apples' in 1933.
