Ian Richardson Brief Biography

Ian Richardson was best known for his role as the cold and evil Tory politician Francis Urquhart in the much praised BBC drama of the 1990s, 'House Of Cards'. He also reprised the role of Urquhart in 'To Play The King' and 'The Final Cut'.

Richardson was born on April 7th, 1934 in Edinburgh, and honed his acting skills at the College of Dramatic Art, Glasgow. He went on to become an accomplished stage actor, becoming a leading player with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and, in 1976, was nominated for a Tony for his Broadway performance as Henry Higgins in 'My Fair Lady'.

A few days before he was due to start filming for the long-running ITV drama, 'Midsomer Murders', Ian Richardson died in his sleep on February 9th, 2007. He will be remembered as one of the finest of British actors, and his other notable TV appearances included in 'A Voyage Round My Father (1969)', 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979)', 'The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1983)', and 'Bleak House (2005)'. He also appeared in the films 'Brazil (1985)', 'The Fourth Protocol (1987)', and 'Cry Freedom (1987)'. Ian's father also invented the Jaffa Cake - allegedly!
