THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The 1960s was an era when the Cold War was at its height and film and TV saw an opportunity...James Bond had taken the big screen by storm from 1962 onwards, and TV's equivalent was 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' - which Bond author, Ian Fleming, offered the surname Solo, from his 'Diamonds Are Forever' for. Producer Norman Felton came up with Napoleon. American Robert Vaughn, best-known as one of the Magnificent Seven, was cast as the dark-haired, smooth Solo. Boyish looking British actor David McCallum played blonde Russian, Ilya Kuryakin. Leo G. Carroll played their boss Alexander Waverly. The U.N.C.L.E. in the title stood for United Network Command for Law Enforcement, and their enemies were T.H.R.U.S.H. The show had a huge following, and was full of gadgets which typified 1960s adventure series, and helped attract half a million Americans to join the U.N.C.L.E. fan club. The lovely Stefanie Powers starred in the spin-off show, 'The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.' in 1967, and there were several 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' films, 'One Spy Too Many (1966)', 'The Karabe Killers (1967)', and 'The Helicopter Spies (1968)'. In 1983 Vaughn and McCallum reprised their roles in the TV film, 'The Return Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'. The TV series ran from 1964 to 1968. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com.
