STAN MORTENSEN BRIEF BIOGRAPHY (extract)

Few players had such eventful careers as Stan Mortensen. A plane crash during the War was thought to have ended his playing days, and during World War Two Stan made his international debut - for Wales (the Welsh lost a player through injury, and England kindly lent Stan to make up the numbers)! Mortensen also created history by scoring, to date, the only hat-trick in a Wembley FA Cup final in the famous Matthews final of 1953.

In 1950-51 Stan Mortensen was the leading scorer in Division One with 30 goals for Blackpool. He'd also played in two losing FA Cup finals for the Tangerines, in 1948 and 1951, before picking up a winners medal after the '53 final.

Read the full bio, and of three other Blackpool players selected in Paul Rance's England's 50 Greatest Footballers (paperback).
