CHELSEA'S FIRST STAR - VIVIAN WOODWARD BRIEF BIOGRAPHY (extract)
As one of English football's last great amateur players, Vivian Woodward had a reputation for being both an outstanding centre-forward (and sometime inside-forward) and sportsman. An architect by trade, Woodward didn't need money for playing football. But, today, he would be rated in the £50m bracket. As it was, with Steve Bloomer, Woodward was England's best striker of the early 20th Century.
Quick, but not powerfully built, Woodward was a thoughtful player, who played for Spurs and Chelsea. Woodward helped both clubs reach Division One, while, in various international matches, he scored more than 70 goals. For England at full level, Woodward scored 29 goals in 23 matches, and his record as England's highest goalscorer stood until the 1950s. Woodward also played in 38 amateur internationals for England, and he picked up two gold medals as a member of the successful Great Britain team at two Olympic Games - in London in 1908 and in Stockholm in 1912.
