The Internet Can Be Like Fool's Gold, But You Can Make Money - If You Put The Hours In
booksmusicfilmstv.com webmaster Paul Rance gives his verdict on some of the genuine opportunities for making some money through the net

Don't fall for the claims of instant wealth. On the internet, you can make a living, and a good one - if you put in the hours. Here, I'll offer my own advice garnered from my decade using the net.

For starters, it's always a good idea to have a website of your own, whether free pages or your own domain - even if you are just interested in getting some extra money from filling in surveys. Often, survey sites will offer an affiliate link or banner to help publicise their site - and gain you some money, cashback points, etc., when someone joins them through your link. If you have hundreds of friends who you think are interested in making a bit of extra money, then maybe you don't need the website. But DON'T spam. You'll give yourself a bad name AND the company you're trying to promote, and they will probably come round with sledgehammers and smash up your house...I've heard of many instances of this (lol)!

Seriously, here's a few of my favourites, and some I've not had much success with.

A personal favourite is Amazon. Here is an example of getting the rewards for the work you put in, and you have readymade content for your website or blog with their reviews. Now, if you had the time to manually put up all their products then you'd be able to quit your job, of course. More realistically, you should home in on things you are knowledgeable about, and have an enthusiasm for. I know that sounds almost hackneyed now, but it's a universal truth! Work on things you can write about easily, which complement the Amazon product you're trying to sell. If you have a good knowledge of scripts then you can save time, but things like cgi scripts can cause your website to crash unless you have a helluva lot of webspace to play with, like 1 GB! Search engines also aren't totally stupid, and a site of just scripts won't particularly impress enough to get you high up in their rankings. Amazon also offer a tier structure, whereby you can earn a greater percentage of sales once you reach certain targets. Remember to use keywords, esp. in the title tags and headings of your webpage or blog, to maximise the chances of sales.

TradeDoubler has a wide range of companies under it's wing, but I've only really had much luck with Play.com, so unless you have a hitsville site like the BBC I can't say I'd recommend them that highly.

Google AdSense gains you money for clicks on ads on your site or blog. After Amazon, I'd still say AdSense is the most profitable affiliate program, though you can wonder what is the point of sometimes getting one cent for a click! How much you get for a click can vary widely. If you have a really popular page with the search engines, then companies are likely to make higher bids to be on that page. Google also include search boxes you can put on your page, and you get revenue from people who click on the Google ads which come up in any search. It's important to remember that you DON'T get any money from clicks on the other search results which come up. For those who are prepared to pay to have their ads on sites then Google's AdWords is a program to try.

For REALLY big money on the internet then eBay is the site which offers the best opportunities. But you will really have to work hard, and setting everything up is quite involved. If you're prepared for a long haul to achieve your goal, then get cracking! eBay.com eBay.co.uk

On a completely different level is CashLagoon. Here, you get points, which translate into cents, i.e. 2.00 points is 200 cents/$2. You gain points by joining surveys, buying items, etc. Out of all the firms I've encountered they were the quickest to pay out, and you only have to earn $2 to get a payment, but you'll need a PayPal account. You also have to phone up to confirm your details for your first cash claim, but I found this rather painless. You certainly won't get rich with CashLagoon, but if you need quick money into your PayPal account they're very useful!

Another promising company is earnawad.com, especially with their £5 referral fees for everyone you can persuade to join.

Sometimes, there's not enough hours to fully try out all the affiliate opportunities there are out there. These don't match Amazon and AdSense, but that's maybe because I've given them limited scope. Here's some examples of Easyart and AllPosters banners.

I find a lot of the survey sites disappointing, and Ciao especially so. I've often wasted several minutes filling in a survey, only to be told that my profile doesn't fit! Their surveys often tend to be lengthy for not very much money. You're probably better off signing up with survey sites themselves, and not just conduit sites, though pureprofile.com is an exception. Some good survey sites to sign up to include yougov.com/ and an especial favourite, Harris Poll Online - http://www.harrispollonline.com/ - good rewards and short and snappy surveys.
