James Cagney was a guy who got lucky. He was a man who gleaned a lot from the world he came from, and the movies possibly saved him from going down the road of the characters he played.

Born in 1899, Cagney was a tough New Yorker who played gangsters and tough guys better than anyone. Notably as the hard as nails Rocky Sullivan in 'Angels With Dirty Faces (1938)', and as the maniacal Arthur 'Cody' Jarrett in 'White Heat (1949)'.

However, he was versatile, and won and Oscar as the song and dance man George M. Cohan in 'Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)'. He was also hilarious as the paranoid Captain Morton in 'Mister Roberts (1955)'.

James Cagney died in 1986, after a heart attack. He would definitely come in the top 20 of all-time movie stars.
