James Mason

James Mason (1909-1984)
Son of a wool merchant from Huddersfield, W. Yorks, the Cambridge educated James Mason had early aspiratons of becoming an architect, but realised the stage was his true vocation.

He trod the boards with the Old Vic and the Gate Company in Dublin, and began starring in B movies before his big break in 'The Man In Grey' in 1943.

Having a powerful presence and rich voice he was natural leading man material, and often played dark roles, such as in 'The Seventh Veil (1945)', 'Odd Man Out (1945)', 'The Wicked Lady (1945)', and opposite Judy Garland (for which both he and Ms. Garland were Oscar nominated) in 'A Star Is Born (1954)'. He was also memorable as Field Marshal Rommel in 'The Desert Fox (1954)', as the tormented Humbert Humbert in 'Lolita (1962), and for his wonderfully moving role in 'The Fall Of The Roman Empire' in 1964.
