James Stewart

James Stewart (1908-1997)
James Stewart remains an immensely popular film star, being renowned for being as nice as the characters he often played.

Gifted in several fields, including gaining a degree at Princeton University in Architecture, Stewart wasn't always what he seemed however. Being a bomber pilot in World War Two proved Stewart wasn't as sentimental as some of the roles he played, and that he was more complex than he appeared on the surface. Fellow acting legend Henry Fonda was one of James Stewart's closest friends, but both had very different political views. After a fist fight over politics, both men never really discussed politics again, and they spent time together on less emotive things. Their children remembered their fathers rather endearing hobby of painting model aeroplanes together. Stewart had also gained a reputation as a playboy as a young man, and he married for the first time aged 41, but his marriage to Gloria lasted until her death in 1994.

The raft of top films James Stewart appeared in included 'You Can't Take It With You (1938)', 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington (1939)', 'It's A Wonderful Life (1946)', 'Harvey (1950)', 'The Glenn Miller Story (1953)', 'Rear Window (1954)', and 'Vertigo (1958)'. His one Best Actor Oscar came when playing reporter Macaulay Connor in another biggie, 'The Philadelphia Story (1940)'.
