Mysteries of Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptian civilisation was preoccupied with death, the supernatural, and magic. The Egyptian Book of the Dead, which accompanied the dead on their journey into the afterlife, contains spells for overcoming dangers found in the underworld. Magical spells, rituals, and potions were used to treat the sick. There were also spells for healing, love, and defence against an enemy. Magic was used to protect tombs from robbers. The tombs of the Pharaohs were sealed with curses against anyone who disturbed them. The ancient Egyptians had hundreds of gods for different purposes, which were invoked through magic and ritual by the priests. Isis, the divine mother, and Osiris, the god of the underworld, were probably the most popular Egyptian gods. The most impressive temple complex dedicated to the worship of the gods is Karnak, near Luxor, which is the largest ancient religious site in the world. The magnificent pyramids of Giza were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and are thought to have been built around 4,500 years ago, but they still remain a riddle to archaeologists. They were built with precision, using advanced astronomy and mathematics, and were recently discovered to be aligned with the three bright stars in the belt of Orion. The origin and purpose of the nearby Sphinx is also unknown. There are legends that an advanced ante-diluvian civilisation built the structures at Giza over 10,000 years ago. According to Edgar Cayce, the Sleeping Prophet, refugees from the doomed mythical civilisation of Atlantis fled to Egypt around 10,500 BC, where they formed a colony and built the pyramids at Giza using their advanced technology. The tale of Atlantis was recounted to the Greek, Solon, by Egyptian priests around 600 BC, and later told by Plato in his dialogues on Atlantis. Therefore, Ancient Egyptian civilisation could be much older than what is believed, and challenges the established view of ancient history. Today the ruins of Ancient Egypt are a major tourist attraction, with a magical atmosphere. They remind us of the mysteries of the distant past and ensure that the achievements of ancient advanced civilisations are never completely forgotten. |
