There's a lot of writers and poets trying to make their mark, and using writing websites helps in gaining exposure and experience, and it also helps to hone writing skills. But, unless you are very prolific, you are unlikely to be able to earn a full-time living through them.

If you are writing for other sites you should also have your own website and blog.

The Reasons

1) You obviously don't have much control over the success or failure of other sites. If you put all your eggs in one basket, and that site closes, or reduces drastically the amount of its contributors, then you risk being left stranded.

Having your own website with your own paid for domain name is really a statement of intent.

A blog is also a good idea for writers and poets to use to promote their work, but paying for a domain name is showing that you are prepared to back yourself.

2) Many writing sites give writers and poets money in revenue share through the likes of Google's AdSense. So, why not have a website and use AdSense, Amazon, etc. to make money on your own website? Doing so is easy enough, if you have even a basic understanding of HTML code.

3) A website allows you to post news about your writing and poetry, including links to other sites featuring your work. Social media does similarly, but, as it is so fast moving, your latest updates may not always be seen. A website acts as a fixed point for your work.
