A second World Cup for South Africa

South Africa won their second Rugby World Cup with a 15-6 win in the final over unlucky England. In a tryless, but gripping, final, England's Mark Cueto had a try disallowed in the second half for a foot in touch. TV replays were not 100% conclusive either way. South Africa just about deserved their win, with Percy Montgomery in good kicking form. England's golden boy Jonny Wilkinson missed with a couple of drop goal attempts.

The Greatest Rugby World Cup

The 2007 Rugby World Cup in France was the best Rugby World Cup so far, with closely fought games in the knockout phases, upsets in the shape of Argentina beating France (twice!), and Fiji beating Wales, and the underachieving All Blacks being knocked out by France. Reigning champions England somehow muddled through to the final, which no-one dared predict out load, without fear of the long arm of the men in white coats dragging 'em away.

Okay, so the rugby wasn't exhilarating, but the closeness of a lot of the big games was the essence of what people mean by the theatre of sport. The results were often been as unpredictable as an Oliver Reed interview!

- Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com.

The Best Quote

The always articulate and entertaining Stuart Barnes describing, during his ITV commentary, French colossus Sébastien Chabal (below) as a "21st Century Asterix".
