Gunsmoke And McCloud Star
Dennis Weaver Passes Away
Written by Paul Rance
Tuesday, 28 February 2006
Dennis Weaver, famous for his role as the
drawling Chester in 1950s and 1960s western, 'Gunsmoke', and as
the unconventional 1970s cop, McCloud, has died of cancer, aged
81.
Weaver also had an important part to play in Steven Spielberg's
career - being the star of the director's first major film, 'Duel
(1971)', when Weaver played a motorist trying to get out of the
relentless path of a crazy petrol tanker driver.
Born in Missouri, Dennis Weaver had an acting career spanning 50
years, won an Emmy for his role as Chester Goode in 'Gunsmoke',
and also appeared in 'The Simpsons' and 'Gentle Ben' - the latter
being a mid-'60s show revolving around a family that adopts a
big, friendly, black bear. Weaver will probably be as remembered,
in decades to come, as much for his environmental and
humanitarian work as his acting. He lived in an environmentally
friendly house in Colorado - the state in which he died. Dennis
Weaver was a giant among men.
