The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|
|||||
A surprisingly uneventful game between two of football's great stylists saw Argentina again fail to beat Holland. The only time they've done so was in the 1978 World Cup final. Both sides, though, had already qualified for the knockout phase, and so rested some key players. Argentina went closest to scoring, when Juan Riquelme's low free kick was deflected onto a post in the first half. Maxi Rodriguez also sent a vicious long range shot just wide shortly after, for the South Americans. Dirk Kuyt was lively for the Dutch, but Argentina shaded the half, with Lionel Messi showing glimpses of his burgeoning talent. Holland's Phillip Cocu forced a good save from Roberto Abbondanzieri in the second half, and Carlos Tevez's stinging drive saw Edwin van der Sar save well to his left at the other end. Tevez's late shot then nearly won the game for Argentina, but was just off target. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
