The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|
|||||
The best game of the tournament so far saw two impressive teams going at it hammer and tongs. The Ivory Coast were making their debut in the World Cup finals, while Argentina are always one of the favourites. Both teams have good reputations and they didn't disappoint. Jose Pekerman's Argentina were up for it from the start, and took the lead via Juan Riquelme's spiteful free kick, which broke for Chelsea's Hernan Crespo to skilfully poke home. Argentina took a 2-0 lead, when Riquelme played a delightful, and disguised, through ball for Javier Saviola to push past the Ivorian 'keeper, Jean-Jacques Tizie. In the second half Argentina were looking to coast through the game, but the Ivory Coast were dogged, with another Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba, being a constant handful for the Argentinian defence, which started to get nervous after Drogba's neat finish late on. These two teams have been the best in the tournament so far. Both sides are packed with skill, pace, and desire, with Argentina's defensive nous and more clinical finishing just about making them worthy winners. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
