Argentina coasted past a dispirited Serbia & Montenegro side, to move into the knockout phase - as expected. An early goal gave the South Americans the platform to tear S&M apart, when Maxi Rodriguez had beautifully finished off a flowing move. But the second goal was even better, with a 24 pass move ending with Hernan Crespo's backheel into the path of substitute Esteban Cambiasso, who crashed the ball home. It was no surprise when Argentina scored a third, which they did after Javier Saviola had won the ball and got in a shot, which Serbia & Montenegro 'keeper Dragoslav Jevric palmed into the path of Rodriguez, who scored in off the post. In the second half, BBC pundit Ian Wright reckoned: "S&M could get a good whipping" - and he was right. Former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic, playing in his 100th international, brought out a good save from Roberto Abbondanzieri in Argentina's goal, but any hope of a Serbia & Montenegro fightback were ended when Mateja Kezman was sent off for a mistimed tackle. In the final 15 minutes, S&M were cut to ribbons, with Barcelona's Lionel Messi coming on as a sub, and he only added to the Eastern Europeans woe, tearing down the left to lay a goal on a plate for Crespo. Juan Riquelme then set up another substitute, Carlos Tevez, who showed determination and skill to notch the fifth. Serbia & Montenegro's misery was complete, when another great move allowed Messi to calmly score a sixth. Argentina look potential world champions. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
