A two goal margin flattered Brazil, who go into the knockout phase on the back of two ordinary performances. Australia were determined, and impressive, both going forward and in defence.

Brazil struggled to pose Australia many problems in the first half. Ronaldo almost took an air shot when well placed in the penalty area, and also fired just wide. Australia nearly took the lead at the end of the first half, when substitute Marco Bresciano hit a vicious long range shot just over.

Early in the second half Ronaldo passed to a previously ineffective Adriano, who finished sublimely from just outside the box. Australia should have equalised, though, when Dida dropped a cross to Liverpool's Harry Kewell, who had just come on as a sub, but he blasted poorly over. Kewell then nearly made amends with a good shot which just cleared the crossbar.

The introduction of Robinho for Ronaldo gave Brazil more verve, but opportunities were coming thick and fast for both sides. Kaka going closest for Brazil hitting the bar with a header, from a Ronaldinho corner. For Australia, Bresciano forced Dida into a good save, and the same Australian player's free kick was played in, but just went wide, when not getting a decisive touch. Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka also lobbed just over for the Socceroos, but Robinho helped secure the game for Brazil, when his shot hit a post, leaving sub Fred to easily tap in.
