The 2006 World Cup in Germany

A very dramatic game between the Group F underdogs, which looked likely to have been decided by Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura's controversial goal. He had floated a cross straight in, which Australia 'keeper Mark Schwarzer missed after being impeded. Also an even game, Australia got a deserved equaliser when Japanese goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi fluffed a throw-in, which Everton's Tim Cahill turned in to level things, and give Australia their first World Cup finals goal. The same player then should have had a penalty given against him moments later, but shortly after that Cahill smashed in a sublime winner, and John Aloisi's superb run ended in a third for the Socceroos - their first ever World Cup finals victory, though the scoreline was very hard on Japan. Full marks for Australian coach Guus Hiddink on his inspired substitutions. Bringing on Cahill, Aloisi, and Josh Kennedy totally changed the game, and has given Australia a chance of progressing out of the group stage. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
