The 2006 World Cup in Germany

The first appearance in the World Cup finals for the Czech Republic since the end of Czechoslovakia, ended with a comfortable win for the Eastern European side. Arsenal's new signing Tomas Rosicky was the star man for the Czechs, with a stunning long range strike in the first half, and an assured right foot finish, after receiving Pavel Nedved's clever pass, in the second. Rosicky also rattled the bar with another long range effort in the second half. Giant frontman Jan Koller had given the Czechs an early lead with a skilful and powerful header, from an inviting cross from Zdenek Grygera, but pulled up near half time with what looked a serious injury. Claudio Reyna struck the post with a long range shot for the US, when they were only 1-0 down, but they rarely threatened until Eddie Johnson's introduction. The Czechs look the best team in the finals, along with Argentina, so far. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
