The 2006 World Cup in Germany

France blew a great chance to put themselves in a strong position to qualify from Group G, drawing a game they dominated and were leading until late on. The French were more like themselves in the first half, and took the lead after Sylvain Wiltord's scuffed shot fell to Thierry Henry, who scored calmly. Patrick Vieira headed 'in', for what should have been a second goal, but referee Benito Archundia made a howler, thinking the ball hadn't gone over the line. Amazingly, South Korea equalised late on, when they hadn't really created any good openings in the whole game. Manchester United's Park Ji-Sung flicked the ball towards goal from close range, and French 'keeper Fabien Barthez could only get a hand to the ball, and help it loop into the net. France had been complacent in the second half, and when they then had to score again, Henry and Vieira wasted glorious chances. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
