The 2006 World Cup in Germany

This was the worst game of the tournament so far, with an uininspired French team comfortably held by the combative Swiss. Switzerland came closest to winning the game, when Alexander Frei should have turned in a Tranquillo Barnetta free kick, which hit the French post in the first half. In the second half, substitute Daniel Gygax saw Fabien Barthez save his close range header, when Gygax should have done better. The French team have looked over the hill for a few years now. They possess some of the greatest players who have ever walked on a football field, and these players are still at great clubs, but Zinedine Zidane of Real Madrid is not the player he once was, and Patrick Vieira of Juventus was totally anonymous. Thierry Henry walks on water for Arsenal, but in this game most of his goal attempts were poor. France did, however, nearly nick the game late on, when sub Vikash Dhorasoo fizzed an angled drive just wide. Frei, though, cost Switzerland a chance of winning when he handled a cross, which teammate, Arsenal's Johan Djourou, was waiting to easily head in. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
