France won their first game in the World Cup finals since the 1998 World Cup final, and so reach the last 16.

Patrick Vieira's fine turn and shot calmed French nerves, and then Vieira's headed flick on set up Thierry Henry to turn and crisply score the French second. France had earlier missed a glut of chances, in a game they had to win to qualify, and Togolese goalkeeper Kossi Agassa had also been in fine form.

Though the Africans head home with no points, that doesn't do them justice, as they had seen a lot of decisions go against them in earlier games. As for France, they look a long way short of a side that will come close to winning the World Cup.
