The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|

"A pearler from Pirlo" bellowed the BBC's legendary commentator John Motson, as a right foot belter from Andrea Pirlo gave Italy a lead they just about deserved, against forceful World Cup debutants Ghana. Ghana had several near misses, two penalty claims, and Chelsea's Michael Essien brought a fine save from Gianluigi Buffon. Italy, though, were impressive, with a number of near misses themselves, the most spectacular being Luca Toni's marvellous first half strike, which crashed against the crossbar. Ghana didn't quite have enough penetration to really hurt the Italians, who defended stoutly, and played with flair throughout. An underhit Sammy Kuffour back pass let in sub Vincenzo Iaquinta for an easy late finish to seal the game. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
