The 2006 World Cup in Germany

Ghana secured a place in the knockout stage of the World Cup finals for the first time, thanks to a dubious penalty, awarded for a foul by the USA's Oguchi Onyewu on Ghana's Razak Pimpong. Captain Stephen Appiah smashed home the spot kick, and though Brian McBride headed against the post for the Americans, from an Eddie Lewis cross, Ghana were fairly comfortable in the second half. Earlier, Ghana had taken the lead after USA skipper Claudio Reyna was caught in possession by Haminu Dramani, who coolly steered the pall past 'keeper Kasey Keller. DaMarcus Beasley's inviting cross from the left was lashed in by Clinton Dempsey to make it 1-1, until that decisive penalty on the stroke of half-time, which ended the USA's hopes of reaching the last 16. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
