The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|
|||||
After an even start to this Group C game, two quick strikes by Holland proved decisive, and put them through to the knockout stage, but meant the unlucky Ivory Coast's World Cup would end with their final group match. A cracking free kick from Robin van Persie put the Dutch ahead, which was soon followed by Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy's assured finish to a good move. The Ivorians, however, nearly pulled a goal back, with a superb long range strike from Didier Zokora crashing against the crossbar. Even better followed for the Ivory Coast with a wonderful goal from Bakari Kone. His searing run across the Dutch defence, ended with a long range angled shot, which flew into the net. The Ivory Coast played classy, patient football throughout the second half, but only a Didier Drogba header came close for them, and that was chested off the line by van Persie. The Dutch defence were superb, and came through a tough test to qualify. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
