GROUP D

Frankfurt, Saturday, June 17th

Iran 0 Portugal 2
Deco 63
Ronaldo (pen.) 80

HT: 0-0
Att: 48, 000

A dull game was enlivened, and settled, just after the hour, when Portugal captain Luis Figo rolled the ball into the path of Deco, who smashed the ball home from a central position just outside the penalty area.

Iran replied by going close twice, but Portugal made the game save after Figo was tripped just inside the box, by Yahya Golmohammadi. Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo took the penalty, and thumped it past impressive Iranian 'keeper, and Cat Stevens lookalike, Ebrahim Mirzapour.

Portugal progress to the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time since 1966, but were very unimpressive. Iran won't be going through, and, like a lot of the unfancied teams, play neat football, but lack a cutting edge.
