The Ivory Coast gained their first victory in a World Cup finals, which was slightly harsh on Serbia & Montenegro. In a very eventful game of five goals, two penalties, and two dismissals, S&M stormed into a 2-0 lead, when dodgy Ivorian defending had let in first Nikola Zigic to latch on to a Dejan Stankovic pass to score, and then confusion in the Africans defence let in Sasa Ilic to score a second. The Elephants then came back into the game, when Serbia & Montenegro's Milan Dudic handled in the penalty box. Aruna Dindane then calmly scored from the twice taken spot kick. More drama followed, when S&M substitute, Albert Nadj, was sent off just on half-time for a second bookable offence.

The second half was just as eventful, with Ivorian defender Blaise Kouassi getting in a superb 30 yard strike which hit the bar. Dindane then headed in a cross for the equaliser, before Dudic had another penalty given against him for handball, late on, which Bonaventure Kalou took, sending Serbia & Montenegro 'keeper, Dragoslav Jevric, the wrong way. There was still time for another sending off. This time, the Ivory Coast's Cyrille Domoraud, for a second bookable offence, when clattering into Savo Milosevic.
