The 2006 World Cup in Germany

This slow starting game turned into a thriller in the second half. After the Ukraine's poor performance, both sides must have realised that the expected European one-two in this group was not so cut and dried. Hannibal's lot (Tunisia) took the lead, after Saudi Arabia's comical efforts to clear a free kick fell to striker Ziad Jaziri, who athletically smashed the ball home. Not much else happened, in truth, in this game until after half time. Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Noor wasted a good chance early in the second half, but he made amends when his fine pass was sharply put away by Yasser Al Kahtani at the near post. Veteran substitute Sami Al Jaber then broke away, after woeful Tunisian defending, to calmly put the Saudis ahead. Sulimani Hussein then hit the woodwork from a free kick, for Saudi Arabia, and there seemed no way back for the African side, until Bolton's Radhi Jaidi powerfully met a good cross from the right, to head Tunisia level very late on. Honours shared, which was a fair reflection on both sides. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
