The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|
|||||
Togo put their off-field problems behind them to begin their first ever World Cup finals match in confident fashion. They took the lead, when a good pass put in Mohamed Kader, who finished superbly with an angled drive from just inside the box. The West Africans nearly added to their lead, when Yao Junior Senaya forced a good save from South Korean 'keeper Woon Jae Lee, and early in the second half he saved well again, from another good angled shot from Kader. The game swung around in the second half, when Togo captain Jean-Paul Abalo was sent off for a late challenge, by English referee Graham Poll, and Togo's woes increased when natural ash blonde Chun Soo Lee brilliantly curled the resultant free kick into the net. Togo remained a threat, though, until South Korean sub Jung Hwan Ahn finished off a fine move with a 25-yard screamer, on the turn, into the top left hand corner. That sealed South Korea's first World Cup finals win on foreign soil. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
