The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|
|||||
Spain qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup with this win, but they left it late. They had started the game brightly, with David Villa hitting a blistering shot just wide, but the Spanish had a shock shortly afterwards, when Jaouhar Mnari put Tunisia ahead, seeing an initial shot well saved by Iker Casillas, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper couldn't keep it away from Mnari, who followed up to score. Spain, though, were the better side in the first half, with Fernando Torres firing just over, and Xabi Alonso seeing his header cleared off the line by Anis Ayari. In the second half Spain were reduced to trying shots from long range, unable to create openings, until substitute Raul scored from close in, converting after veteran 'keeper Ali Boumnijel failed to hold on to a Cesc Fabregas shot. Boumnijel then went walkabout, allowing Torres to round him and put Spain ahead, following a penetrating pass from Arsenal's Fabregas, whose introduction at half-time gradually turned the game round in the Europeans favour. The Spaniards made the game safe, when a foul by Alaeddine Yahia on Torres resulted in a penalty, which Torres duly powered home, despite a valiant attempt to save from Boumnijel. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
