The 2006 World Cup in Germany

There was a lively start to this game, from Spain especially, and they opened the scoring from a corner, through a near post header by Liverpool's Xabi Alonso. The Spaniards scored a second soon after, when Valencia's David Villa's well struck free kick got a wicked deflection off the Ukrainian wall. The game was effectively finished as a contest after Ukraine's Vladislav Vashchuk was punished for impeding Fernando Torres, with both a penalty awarded against him, and a red card. Villa's resulting penalty was too powerful for Ukraine 'keeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy, despite his valiant effort to save it. Spain's Marcos Senna was to send a rasping shot into the Ukraine net for what looked like their fourth, but was it ruled out for a foul. The Spanish were not to be denied, though, and Torres finished off some great interplay, with a fierce shot from just inside the penalty area. The Ukraine showed very little on their World Cup debut, and Chelsea's new signing Andriy Shevchenko was denied a possible goal chance, when pulled up with a debatable offside decision in the first half. Nothing went right for them. Andriy Voronin put in a superb volley, which flew just wide, and sub Sergei Rebrov blasted over when well placed. Spain, however, take the honours as the best team in this World Cup so far - after the first batch of group matches. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
