The 2006 World Cup in Germany
|

The first big shock of this tournament saw 10-man Trinidad & Tobago hold on against a Swedish side full of endeavour, but little invention. T&T substitute Cornell Glen even struck the Swedish bar with a vicious angled shot, after Avery John had perhaps been harshly sent off for two rough challenges. West Ham custodian Shaka Hislop, enjoying a new lease of life at 37, made a series of fine saves for Trinidad & Tobago, after a late call-up due to the injury to Dundee 'keeper Kelvin Jack. Captain Dwight Yorke was inspirational for the Caribbean side in their first World Cup finals, as he covered acres for the cause. Other notable performances came from Gillingham's Brent Sancho and Luton's Carlos Edwards - who were both indomitable. Edwards finding time in the first half to fire in a fine long range shot, which was well saved by Rami Shaaban. Trinidad & Tobago were solid at the back, denying the vaunted Swedish trio of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson, and Freddie Ljungberg. Next stop, England. - Paul Rance/booksmusicfilmstv.com. |
