Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer and poet, whose work was brought to new audiences in the 20th Century through movie adaptations. Poe was a pioneer in writing terms, and help to make short stories, horror, science fiction and detective fiction popular.

Poe's first published work was a collection of poetry, which was produced while Poe was still a teenager. Suffering a traumatic early life, when becoming an orphan, Edgar Allan Poe became committed to his writing despite often being poor as a result. Poe died at a relatively young age, and the cause of his death has often provoked lurid speculation.

The death of Poe's young wife, Virginia, after years of illness, was probably responsible for much of the dark material in Edgar Allan Poe's work. Poe's most famous works include 'The Raven', 'The Black Cat', 'The Fall Of The House Of Usher', 'The Masque Of The Red Death', 'The Murders In The Rue Morgue', 'The Pit And The Pendulum', 'Annabel Lee', and 'The Narrative Of Arthur Gordon Pym Of Nantucket'.
