Dinosaur Jr. are, like The Velvet
Underground were, commercially unsuccessful (so far), but
they have been hugely influential, and it could be argued
that they invented grunge, and not Nirvana.
The original line-up of Dinosaur Jr. consisted of J.
Mascis (guitar, vocals), Lou Barlow (bass), and Emmett
Patrick Murphy (drums). Formed in 1983 in Amherst,
Massachusetts, Dinosaur Jr. began to make people sit up
and take notice with their 1988 album on SST, 'Bug',
which was an incredible record, with a lot of styles,
mostly used to good effect.'Freak Scene' contained some
guitar work rarely heard in today's world of increasingly
plastic music. Other notable songs included the gentler,
beautiful 'Pond Song' and 'No Bones', though the latter
exploded at the end, while 'Don't' is one to upset nasty
neighbours with - mind blowing in its power and intensity.
J. Mascis proved himself to be one of the great musical
talents of his generation - albeit an unappreciated one.
Mascis, Barlow, and Murphy got back together in 2005 for
another crack at finding success with Dinosaur Jr. second
time around.
