Bette Davis

Bette Davis (1908-1989)
Arguably the greatest of all American female film stars, Bette Davis began her career as a fluffy blonde, and ended up as a master at playing formidable women. She was also an inspiration for women actors in a male dominated industry.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Ms. Davis made an impression on Broadway in 1929, then quickly moved to Hollywood, where she famously took on Warner Brothers, early in her career, after being offered better roles in Britain.

First really making her name in the 1930s, Bette Davis won a Best Actress Oscar for 'Dangerous (1935)'. Other films of note included 'Of Human Bondage (1934)', and 'Jezebel (1938)'. For the latter she won another Best Actress Oscar.

Bette Davis could play vulnerable characters beautifully, particularly in 'Now, Voyager (1942)'. Her peak years were the 1930s and 1940s, but Ms. Davis always exuded star quality, especially in 'All About Eve (1950)' and 'Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? (1962)'. She was the first woman to be given a Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute.
