Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011)
Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most famous movie actresses of the 20th Century, and her relationship with Welsh actor Richard Burton was one of the most famous dramas of that century!

Born in London, on February 27th, 1932, Elizabeth Taylor moved with her family to the US at the start of World War Two. Two years later, at the age of nine, she was appearing in her first film, 'There's One Born Every Minute'. In the 1940s, Elizabeth Taylor made her name appearing in family friendly films such as 'Lassie Come Home (1943)', 'National Velvet (1944)', and 'Courage of Lassie (1946)' - alongside young actors Mickey Rooney and Roddy McDowall.

From the 1960s, Elizabeth Taylor became arguably the most famous movie actress in the world, and her relationship with Richard Burton made them the world's most famous couple. But, Elizabeth could act. She won plaudits for her performance opposite Paul Newman, as Maggie Pollitt in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)', which was adapted from a Tennessee Williams play, and she won two Best Actress Oscars, playing prostitute Gloria Wandrous in 'BUtterfield 8 (1960)' and as Martha in the visceral 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)'. The latter, along with 'Cleopatra (1963)', saw Elizabeth Taylor's most memorable performances opposite Burton. For the latter, Elizabeth made history as the first Hollywood star to receive a million dollars for a film role.

Elizabeth Taylor's last most notable movie performance was as bitchy Marina Rudd in Agatha Christie's adaptation 'The Mirror Crack'd (1980)', opposite the equally feisty Kim Novak. Elizabeth Taylor also appeared in American TV series 'Hotel' and 'General Hospital' in the 1980s.

Known for playing iconic figures, Elizabeth Taylor played Helen of Troy in the 1967 movie 'Doctor Faustus', and her last role was as the voice of God's girlfriend in 2001 TV series, 'God, the Devil and Bob'. Ms. Taylor was a beautiful woman, had a voluptuous figure, was a brilliant actress, and was a strong humanitarian, which resulted in her being awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy Awards in 1993. She appeared in a 1953 film called 'The Girl Who Had Everything', which was true - up to a point. But her life was blighted by illness and sadness. Married eight times (twice to Burton), Elizabeth Taylor's third husband, Mike Todd, died in a plane crash. Todd's wife missed the flight because she had a cold.

Elizabeth Taylor died in Los Angeles, California, on March 23rd, 2011, after years of declining health. She was 79. Elizabeth Taylor was a one-off, especially with those violet eyes. She even voiced the first word of Maggie in 'The Simpsons' in 1992!
