John Hurt (1940- )
British actor John Hurt has the sensitive face born to play tortured roles, and he's done so in many major films. He was outstanding in '10 Rillington Place (1971)', as the tragic Timothy Evans; in 'The Elephant Man (1980)', as the literally tortured John Merrick; and as Winston Smith, the broken hero of '1984 (1984)'. It wasn't surprising, then, when it was Hurt's stomach, in 'Alien (1979)', which had the misfortune of ejecting a particularly unattractive alien. Hurt has also appeared in a fair number of family films, however, including the first Harry Potter movie, and he's also been a voice artist in several animated films, notably 'Watership Down (1978)'.
