Sidney Poitier
Sidney Poitier (1927-2022)
The first black actor to win an Oscar for a leading film role, Sidney Poitier made his name in powerful, groundbreaking films, exposing prejudice in great movies such as 'The Defiant Ones (1958)', 'To Sir With Love (1967)', 'In The Heat Of The Night (1967)', and 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (1967)'.
Poitier's Best Actor win came in 1963, for his performance in 'Lilies Of The Field (1963)', and he also gained recognition as a director. Raised in poverty in Cat Island in the Bahamas, Poitier had a determination to succeed, fuelled further by his initial rejection by the American Negro Theatre in New York.
