Tom
Hanks (1956- )
Californian Tom Hanks is the most successful film actor
of his generation. Beginning with parts on TV in shows
such as 'The Love Boat', 'Taxi', and 'Happy Days', in the
early 1980s, and playing quirky, adolescent characters in
his early film career, Hanks has come a long way,
starring in arguably more blockbusters than any other
actor in recent film history, including 'Philadelphia (1993)',
'Forrest Gump (1994)', 'Apollo 13 (1995)', 'Toy Story (1995)',
and 'Saving Private Ryan (1998)'. Hanks also starred in
the notable TV series 'Band Of Brothers (2001)'.
Hanks was the first actor to win back to back Best Actor
Oscars - in 1993 and 1994 - since Spencer Tracy in the
1930s, for his portrayal of brave Andrew Beckett in
'Philadelphia', and the lovable Forrest Gump.
An environmentalist, a Trekkie, and distant ancestor of
Abraham Lincoln, Tom Hanks is the youngest-ever recipient
of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award,
which he received in 2002, and he helps actors
internationally as a member of the International Thespian
Society.
